The new Sinai Hospital Donor Memorial Wall will feature an interactive kiosk to educate people on organ and tissue donation and offer opportunity to register as a donor on the spot using a driver’s license.
BALTIMORE – June 2, 2016 – PRLog – The Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland (LLF), together with Lifebridge Health and Countermind, LLC, is proud to announce the unveiling of “Swipe to Donate Life” at the Sinai Hospital Donor Memorial Wall. The Sinai Hospital Donor Memorial Wall will be dedicated at a memorial ceremony on June 9,2016 at 5:30 pm. The event will be attended by donor family members, transplant recipients, and staff from The LLF and Lifebridge Health hospitals. Then Donor Memorial Wall is made up of individual name plates honoring the hospital’s generous organ and tissue donors. An interactive monitor kiosk installed on the wall will feature educational information and the “Swipe to Donate Life” app. While the “Swipe to Donate Life” app has been implemented in Maryland and other states, this is the first use of the app enabling the public to enter a secure organ and tissue donor registry at the site of a Donor Memorial wall, at any time, independent of the presence of an organization representative or app operator.n
Sinai Hospital Donor Memorial Wall is the first in the country to offer “Swipe to Donate Life” access 24/7 at a donor memorial wall. “Swipe to Donate Life”n has been implemented in Maryland since March 2015. This fully customized app runs on a mobile device (such as iPhone or iPad) and, equipped with an sled accessory from Barcoding, Inc., allowing an individual to register as organ and tissue donors by scanning the driver’s license barcode. The donor’s information is then securely added to the Donate Life Maryland Registry in real time. Amy Perry, President of Sinai Hospital and Executive Vice President of Lifebridge Health, said, “Sinai Hospital is honored to be home to the nation’s first interactive registration donor memorial wall, where we hope the inspiring donor and recipient stories, as well as the easy-to-use kiosk, will encourage visitors and employees to consider and choose organ and tissue donation. We are pleased to work with The Living Legacy Foundation on this important initiative as we acknowledge and thank these generous donors and their families.”
The “Swipe to Donate Life” interactive registry kiosk was funded through a generous donation from the W.D. “Pete” Class Foundation. The Class family was impacted by donation when their son, Towson University football player Gavin Class, received a liver transplant in 2013. Charlie Alexander, President and CEO of The LLF, said, “With over 120,000 people currently on the organ transplant waiting list, it is imperative that every person who wishes ton save lives as an organ and tissue donor takes action and registers. We are proud to work with Lifebridge Health and Countermind to make saving lives through organ and tissue donation as easy as possible. This wall will allow potential donors to be inspired by the names and stories of our many generous local donors and immediately act by registering to save lives as a donor themselves.” Chuck Krutsinger, CEO of Countermind, said, “As a living donor myself, I am proud to be part of the important work of organ donor registration. The LLF is changing the game of donor registration by placing Swipe to Donate Life on a donor wall where the call to save lives through donation will be powerful and continual. Countermind and Barcoding, Inc. look forward to seeing the ongoing, positive impact of mobile data capture technology on donor initiatives, not only in the state of Maryland, but across the United States.”
Those wishing to save lives as an organ and tissue donor can register by saying “Yes” at the MVA or online at http://www.donatelifemaryland.org.

A recent study funded by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that an iPod Touch-based platform and FDA’s Sentinel system could be used to accurately track the safety of drugs and vaccines dispensed during public health emergencies. The platform, called the Handheld Automated Notification for Drugs and Immunizations (HANDI), uses an application running on an iPod touch, fitted with a card reader and barcode scanner, to record patients’ information from a driver’s license. HANDI is the project name used by Denver Public Health for its customized implementation of Mobile Intelligence™ Clinic (see MI Clinci case study).
The goal of the study was to determine whether information gathered using the platform could be matched to electronic health records (EHR) within FDA’s Sentinel database as a means of monitoring the safety of medical products used in public health emergencies. According to the study (Using a Handheld Device for Patient Data Collection: A Pilot for Medical Countermeasures Surveillance),
“This investigation demonstrated that a handheld device is a feasible means of collecting patient identity and medical product receipt data. This capacity should be useful for safety surveillance of MCMs, particularly when dispensed in settings outside the traditional health-care delivery system.”
MI Clinic extends existing clinical systems to provide mobile data collection capabilities using customized and optimized workflows. As a result, MI Clinic can address a wide variety of clinical data collection use cases well beyond vaccinations. For more information, see MI Clinic product page.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Immunization Services Division worked with Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) to prepare a “Catalog of Electronic Technologies Used for Data Collection at Vaccination Clinics”. The catalog lists a number of technologies; however, it only identifies a single mobile solution: Handheld Automated Notification for Drugs and Immunizations (HANDI). HANDI is a version of Countermind’s Mobile Intelligence™ Clinic (MI Clinic) specifically tailored for vaccination campaigns. Using MI Clinic Manager an organization can define the data collection requirements for screening and treating patients and the MI Clinic mobile app for iOS will capture that data so that it can be electronically submitted to immunization registries or electronic health records in real time or in batches. For more information about MI Clinic, go to the product page or contact Countermind. You can download the “Catalog of Electronic Technologies Used for Data Collection at Vaccination Clinics” from our site here.
